{"id":2080,"date":"2018-07-24T17:18:49","date_gmt":"2018-07-24T21:18:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/rbwood.com\/dir\/?p=2080"},"modified":"2018-07-25T11:59:33","modified_gmt":"2018-07-25T15:59:33","slug":"necon-38-a-retrospective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rbwood.com\/dir\/necon-38-a-retrospective\/","title":{"rendered":"NECON 38: A Retrospective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rbwood.com\/dir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Necon_FlagLogo.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2081\" src=\"http:\/\/rbwood.com\/dir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Necon_FlagLogo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"308\" height=\"201\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rbwood.com\/dir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Necon_FlagLogo.jpg 308w, https:\/\/rbwood.com\/dir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Necon_FlagLogo-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 308px) 100vw, 308px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Fall 2017, I attended the <a href=\"http:\/\/rbwood.com\/dir\/index.php\/2017\/10\/29\/five-days-in-wicker-park-part-one\/\">Gamut Writer&#8217;s Workshop<\/a>, and one of the many (<em>not entirely sober<\/em>) conversations I had with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renamason.ink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rena Mason<\/a>\u00a0was that I should join the &#8220;NECON group&#8211;they are all horror writers \u00a0from your area and are a lot of fun.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sure,&#8221; I said, after hearing more about this writer&#8217;s convention. &#8220;Sounds like fun!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then, I fucking forgot.<\/p>\n<p>At Stokercon earlier this year, I was chatting with Tony Tremblay and <a href=\"http:\/\/matt-bechtel.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matt Bechtel<\/a>\u00a0who told me (again) ALL about this conference called NECON and that I&#8217;d have a really great time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Great!&#8221; I said. &#8220;I&#8217;ll sign up right away!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then, I fucking forgot. I&#8217;ve had strokes.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I signed up. So the weekend right after<a href=\"http:\/\/rbwood.com\/dir\/index.php\/2018\/07\/12\/readercon-29\/\"> Readercon<\/a> I caught a lift with my editor <a href=\"http:\/\/bookwife.com\/wp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amelia Bennett<\/a>, her husband Paul, and <a href=\"http:\/\/briankirkblog.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brian Kirk<\/a> (<strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">IT WASN&#8217;T MY FAULT, BRIAN<\/span><\/strong>) and set course for Rhode Island and Camp NECON.<\/p>\n<p>Holy Mother of God. What a fantastic experience. Damn, I hate saying Rena, Tony, Matt, Todd (and the others) were right&#8211;but they were.<\/p>\n<p>You KNOW they&#8217;ll lord that over me until Cthulhu comes back.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m still processing the experience, but let me take a stab at why NECON was so amazing.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">DAY ONE<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We checked into The Roger Williams University Baypoint Inn and Conference Center where NECON has been held for some time. The place is what you&#8217;ed expect for a Inn on a college campus: 80&#8217;s architecture, basic rooms and amenities.<\/p>\n<p>BUT.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve never met so many NICE staff members in one place in my life. I was told the folks at the Bayport Inn liked the NECON crowd&#8211;but I didn&#8217;t understand what that meant until I walked through the front doors. Resourceful, ready (and genuine) smiles, always offering to help, always receptive. I dropped my luggage off and proceeded with the Crew to &#8220;1776&#8221; to pick up a few last minute things.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rbwood.com\/dir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_6319.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2083\" src=\"http:\/\/rbwood.com\/dir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_6319-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"474\" height=\"356\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rbwood.com\/dir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_6319-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rbwood.com\/dir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_6319-scaled-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/rbwood.com\/dir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_6319-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rbwood.com\/dir\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_6319-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><em>&#8220;Last Minute Things&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The first afternoon was geared toward setup, folks arriving, and the &#8220;In Real Life&#8221; reconnections that happen when you mostly chat with friends online for the better part of a year.<\/p>\n<p>As evening fell, I found myself out in the quad&#8211;the courtyard of the Bayport Inn&#8211; where there was an organized Scotch tasting going on. I brought my newbie offerings: a bottle of Laphroaig Lore and a distiller&#8217;s edition of Oban. Okay&#8230;that really wasn&#8217;t the problem. It was intermission.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tony Tremblay ( in the photo above) and <a href=\"http:\/\/brackenmacleod.wixsite.com\/author-site\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bracken MacLeod<\/a>\u00a0organized the shindig. In fact, I brought the Laphroaig specifically for Bracken to try&#8211;but he was late getting back from dinner. He found me cradling the Islay Single Malt, muttering &#8220;No more. Bracken only. G&#8217;way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>After assuring me it was, in fact, himself, he took the bottle from me gently and poured himself a &#8220;wee dram.&#8221; The rest of the evening went very well. It was empty in two minutes flat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The shenanigans were followed by the &#8220;meet the author&#8221; party where I apparently proposed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christophergolden.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christopher Golden<\/a>, cried a little when I finally picked up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jamesamoorebooks.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">James A.
